3 Custer, George Armstrong
(1839-1876) Кастер, Джордж АрмстронгОфицер, отличился в ходе Гражданской войны [ Civil War]. В возрасте 23 лет был назначен на должность бригадного генерала, в 24 года - произведен в генерал-майоры [ brevet]. После войны возвращен в звание капитана. В 1866 был произведен в подполковники [ Lieutenant Colonel], командовал Седьмым кавалерийским полком [ Seventh Cavalry] вплоть до своей гибели. В 1868 принял участие в разгроме лагеря племени шайеннов [ Cheyenne] под командованием вождя Черный Котел [ Black Kettle] на р. Уошито [ Washita River]. В 1874 возглавил военную экспедицию в индейскую резервацию Блэк-хиллс [ Black Hills], где открытие золота привело к притоку белых и широкомасштабной войне с шайеннами и сиу [ Sioux]. В решающем наступлении 1876 Кастер во главе южной колонны приблизился к лагерю индейцев на р. Литл-Бигхорн [Little Bighorn River] и, нарушив инструкции, немедленно ввязался в бой. В лагере находились несколько тысяч воинов под руководством вождей Сидящий Бык [ Sitting Bull], Неистовый Конь [ Crazy Horse] и др. Небольшой отряд Кастера был почти полностью уничтожен, сам Кастер убит.
